Apollo Lake II was a mission in Afghanistan that was fatal for Army Ranger Thomas McPhearson. He died on the second night of the mission. This panel features him alive and in his prime, which is how he should be remembered.
This is a night scene, because Army Rangers conducted this mission under the cover of night. It was a mission in an urban area. There is a dog running in the street, and there are lights spilling out of some windows. Thomas McPhearson is clearly visible in the forefront with his red hair and light complexion. His body armor and his weapon are shown in the configuration he had while deployed. His initials are also hidden in the camouflage uniform pants, but that is an intimate story known only to those closest to him. He lived a life of sacrifice and died with the greatest honor and integrity.
Thomas McPhearson was one of the most elite Rangers of modern history – according to those who served with him.
In the background there is a ladder leading to the rooftop. Look closely to see a group of Rangers on the roof behind Thomas. “Got your six” is a common military saying meaning that they are covering him and watching his back.
The advancement of warfare is showcased here. There are night vision goggles on the helmet and an M4 semiautomatic rifle in juxtaposition of the muzzleloader and flintlock. The military has evolved and is more advanced than the Continental Army shown in the first panel. The difference is most prevalent in the uniforms and weapon systems.
Insider Information
